I can’t believe I didn’t review back when it was released. I remember very much enjoying it. Bale and Damon’s chemistry was amazing, and I found the journey captivating.
Recently the algorithm did its thing, showing me a few clips from what is also called Le Mans ’66. Every one of those clips reminded me of the track action and entertaining level of “stick it to the man”. The man being Ford Motor higher ups. When you really want to punch a dude, you know that Josh Lucas is doing a good job. His character Leo Beebe, doesn’t get it.
For everything that goes on through the story, it boils down to one thing. Those who get it and those who never will. Beebe doesn’t. But Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles do. They’re always looking for that perfect lap, even if it’s unattainable.
It’s the relationship between these two that really brings the story together, even more so than the impressive racing scenes. There’s a camaraderie. A love perhaps. Definitely an understanding. Perfectly shown when they fight and can’t bring themselves to actually hurt one another. He hit him with the bread when the can was right there!
That I’ve barely mentioned the actual racing shows how much I enjoy the story and characters of this film. And the racing is great! Back in 2007 Mangold and Bale came together to make 3:10 to Yuma. That’s a good film. This one is even better. A favourite sporting story of mine.
