“50,000 people used to live here. Now it’s a ghost town“
I’ve played some great FPS games. Grand adventures in far away lands with fantastic weaponry.
Modern Warfare isn’t like that. Instead it puts very real and current weaponry in the hands of guys called Gaz with London accents. It takes place in realistic locations and is actually quite straight-laced, in a time before COD got all spectacular and stupid. You don’t have a mech suit and you aren’t in space. It’s you, your comrades, and a lot of bad guys. Game on.
COD 4 constantly surprised me. No one was safe from a bullet as my team travelled the world. Then there’s the one-of-a-kind experience of Ghillied Up, which to this day is one of the single best levels I’ve played in any game. The pressure! The tension! Absolutely thrilling to play and a great balance of scripted events and feeling as though you’re in control.
I’d go on to enjoy other games with Captain Price that had even better online Multiplayer. But as a single player campaign Modern Warfare is COD at it’s best. The reboot followed a similar vein too, but this will always be a high point.
