Thoughts On…Rogue One Trailer

For a while now I’ve been looking forward to Rogue One, but at no point have I felt the excitement that I felt for The Force Awakens. Perhaps chalk it up to already knowing how the story ends.

Well scratch that. This trailer has reached like R2, fixing my hyperdrive and turning up my excitement to much higher levels.

It all feels so familiar, distinctly Star Wars, yet fresh at the same time. Very much a product of people who grew up Star Wars and have a clear admiration for it. Gareth Edwards has mentioned how he wants to be respectful of what made him love the franchise in the first place but is acutely aware of how not pushing the boundaries will lead to stagnation. He’s in a terrible position really but based on this he’s doing a great job.

Don’t the Star Destroyers looks immense? In space and in atmosphere, they have the tactile feel of models. Perhaps the use of shadow (just like the Super SD in Empire) is the cause. Similarly the Death Star itself looks fearsome – blocking out the sun and generally dwarfing everything around it. It doesn’t matter that it’s more than likely just very nice use of CGI, it all feels right.

The same goes for the music. I must admit I worried when I found out that this would be the first Star Wars film not scored by John Williams but Alexandre Desplat has morphed the Imperial March into a softer yet still haunting new form. Very promising.

There seems to be less focus on Jyn this time, giving us more time to see the group and get a better feel of the atmosphere. That’s not to say she doesn’t get to shine though; the shot of her approaching a TIE Fighter is stunning. Speaking of the group I do hope we get to know them and they don’t get sidelined.

That leads nicely into some characters I’m really happy we didn’t get to see much of. Krennic’s cape is something; it’s perhaps Mendelsohn’s performance I’m most looking forward too. What sort of character is he? I don’t know yet, and I don’t need to know. Even one second of Vader was enough to make the hairs on my neck stand up; so why bother showing more?

So I guess you could say this trailer filled me confidence.

Plus of course…original T-65 X-Wings!
