Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Regular readers will know that I’m a big fan of the Resident Evil games. I’ve just finished Resident Evil 7 and it could be the best entry in the series since the original trilogy on PS1.

My feelings on the films are quite the opposite. Starting low and seemingly striving to go lower, subsequent entries have somehow managed to make enough money to warrant another. Poorly conceived and an affront to their video game inspiration, I wonder how these can keep going whilst films that try to be true to their source, like Assassin’s Creed, fail. When you don’t even attempt to explain why characters from the previous film have vanished it just screams of laziness.

Nevertheless I am a glutton for punishment, so despite not encouraging the franchise financially I have seen all of them. Does The Final Chapter manage to avoid further scraping of the barrel and attempt to successfully conclude the series or does it continue the trend of lowest common denominator slow mo suckage that has defined the series?

The latter. Definitely the latter.

Now I’ll be truthful with you. There are some nice shots to be found here. I also appreciate actor continuity so to see the same people back is pleasing.

But it’s overshadowed by a story that tacks on exposition to make itself work in a way that makes the Saw series look thought through. Then there are action scenes that are so horrendously fast and choppy that they make Batman Begins fight scenes look sedate. It’s not a good film, recycling plenty from its predecessors to give a sense of finality that it can’t stick to.

Dispensable characters ellicit no feelings whilst bad guys we’ve seen through several films now are poorly dispensed with. At least it’s not long and the action is spread throughout.

If you’re really into these films you’ll probably enjoy The Final Chapter. It does nothing to convert those who don’t appreciate its style. I can at least commend its consistency!

I’m just glad that it’s over. The video games have come through some tough times to deliver new scares. Maybe someone can do the same for the films in the future.
