The standard revenge movie has you urging the ‘hero’ forward, joining them in a search for catharsis, usually through violent means. We all wanted John Wick to get those fuckers who killed his dog.
But Promising Young Woman asks more. What if it’s not catharsis that the main character wants? What if they can’t let go?
Carey Mulligan is excellent. Initially I rooted for her justice and it’s impactful nature. Teach those ‘nice guys’ a lesson! But does it cross a line? Does she go too far? When should you choose to live? Plenty to ponder in a great film.
