Taika Waititi’s idiosyncratic style melds seamlessly with the God of Thunder as Thor: Ragnarok immediately becomes the strongest film in the Asgardian’s trilogy. Eminently re-watchable, it’s a highly entertaining affair as Thor now seems to have picked up some Earth banter and finally moves on from being a fish out of water.
There’s some great action, some wonderful cameos, and a real sense of fun with new character Korg stealing every scene he’s in.
Blanchett’s Hela is a deliciously slinky villain so it’s a shame we don’t see more of her. But this isn’t her journey, and there’s a bigger issue at hand.
Many dramatic Marvel moments are followed with humour to great effect. It’s a great juxtaposition of feelings and it works when used well. Unfortunately Ragnarok does this so often that I can’t shake a feeling that it undermines itself. There is some real serious stuff here, but it will be remembered as ‘the funny one’. Story threads concerning Heimdall and other side characters don’t perhaps get the time they should.
Nevertheless, Ragnarok is another good Marvel film, moving things nicely into Infinity War. It’s also joyous in its appreciation and use of zanier aspects of the comic books this universe is based on. Marvel have grown braver when it comes to tone, but they aren’t perfect just yet.
