I’m pretty sure that my family were like the family on the back of the NES box. Console in front of the TV on the dining table, two of us playing whilst the parents looks on bemused. Though we actually had the game inserted and the console turned on!
We played and loved the first two Super Mario games, but 3 has always stuck with me as one of the best games ever made. The world map and ability to pick out and use power ups added another layer to game that had running and jumping nailed. You can always trust Nintendo to give you solid controls. No flakiness here.
It turns out that this is my wife’s favourite game too! I will admit something publicly though. It pains me to say it but she’s better at it than I am. There…I said it. It does make me very proud though.
Nostalgia and pride aside, it holds up so well. The fire flower will always be my favourite power up but the SMB3 has another that I truly love…Kuribo’s Shoe! It was only in one level, but I always enjoyed slipping into that big wind up shoe!
After the weirdness of SMB2 (as it was based on another game entirely), this was a welcome return to the mushroom kingdom that we truly recognise.
