My brother and I played Resident Evil just as its sequel was released. For some reason our Mum was cool with us getting it, perhaps because it was a Platinum game and cheaper!
Perched on the edge of the lower bunk, three feet away from our 14″ TV, we loaded up the game and fell in love with the opening sequence. It’s B-Movie schlock, with terrible acting from the ‘actors’ that somewhat resemble the in-game characters.
When the music kicks in and you see “CAST” you know you’re in for a treat. Best voice-over ever? I THINK SO.
Try listening to “BARRY BURTON” and not smiling at the ridiculousness of it all.
We were hooked, but that didn’t prepare us for what was about to happen.
Leaving the dining room and entering the first part of the game proper, we turned the corner to meet our first zombie. The Resident Evil series has moved away from zombies over the year, but this was raw as hell and we weren’t prepared. In a moment of panic I jumped up and turned the PlayStation off. Quite frankly, we’d both shit ourselves. After a minute or two of deep breaths we started it up again and carried on.
What followed was a terrifying experience. Never enough ammo, and even with Jill as our character, not enough item space. We built a relationship with the mansion as we gradually earned access to more of it.
15 years later I’d return to finally complete the game as Chris Redfield, scratching an itch that only an adult SDCC could.
As I’ve got older I’ve come to realise that the first Res is the best Res. I have a deep affection for Nemesis, and considered it my favourite for a long time, but this is the one I always come back to.
